Kaloy Olavides has been into installations and performance until 2007, when he took an interest in collage. He says he was inspired by Winston Smith’s “Act Like There’s Nothing Wrong.” In Chaotic Serenity, Olavides focuses on a single, repetitive image out of magazine cutouts that fills out the frame, often producing an illusory or hidden image. In the series “I Need This,” he tackles the three basic human needs, namely, food, clothing, and shelter. The cutout hands are seen reaching into the “need” in the center.
