Interesting contrasts.
The description sums up the two-man show of Rowena Gaborni and Lito Uyan, two painters who share the same professional and academic background but keep contrasting outlooks in life.
Their first exhibit together, dubbed Different Strokes, convey that air of distinction in oil and acrylic on canvas.
Different Strokes runs from Nov. 22 to Dec. 3 at the West Gallery inside the Mary Santos Arcade, the tambayan of prominent artists and writers along West Avenue, Quezon City.
Gaborni’s oils once again depict solitary figures in high-keyed palette or in dark hues, highlighted with bright colors that convey a mysterious and riveting aura to her works. Gaborni’s empathy towards women and family life has made her one of the country’s prominent contemporary women artists.
A photo enthusiast, Uyan has developed all by himself a refreshing way of presenting in more graphic and stylized terms even the most common objects. A food lover as well, Uyan’s art focuses on a fond object of his mind: Food. And Uyan’s most recent acrylics show his zest to paint culinary delights in vibrant colors.
Gaborni and Uyan may keep different styles and priorities in life. But their background actually has uncanny similarities. Both won the Asean Youth Painting Competition and worked as artists in newspapers. Gaborni was a former art director of a glossy magazine, while Uyan is still a magazine art director. Both are products of the University of Santo Tomas.
