About the Exhibition

In the two-man exhibit, istaDOS, Errol Balcos focuses on portraits that show the inner pride of the indigenous people and the working class in Mindanao, where he was born and raised. The architectural drafting graduate from the Mindanao University of Science and Technology discovers “the dignity of labor of those who suffer,” the “immense pride that only glows outward during moments of rest and meditation,” and “a glimpse of stoicism that is not purely indifferent but attuned, one with God, nature, fate, and inner power.” Kurt Lluch, for his part, presents what appears to be a series of portraits. “The concepts are rather generic in those terms, but the over-all encompassing idea behind each piece is the one that I constantly explore - human contemporary society…Also in that mix are the different situations that define us as individuals,” adds Lluch, using symbols as he deems necessary. Since joining fellow artists from Iligan in weekly art meetings more than a decade ago, Lluch has not looked back. “I always try and mull over concepts and images in my head, [thinking] how can you use this and that, [and] how can you translate it to a finished piece. I don’t even consciously try and make it necessary, like it has been there all along, like I have been doing this all my life.”
