Lakbay

About the Exhibition

Six Filipino artists present their works in a group show journeys and discovery in Lakbay, on view at the West Gallery, SM Megamall from August 2 to 14, 2007. Featured in the exhibit are the works of Marina Cruz, Riel Hilario, Erwin Leaño, Rodel Tapaya, Jose Santos III and Pamela Yan.

The show features each of the six artist’s reflections and insights on the long road voyage to Ilocos Norte, where they spent a week-long vacation at the heritage village of Sitio Remedios in Currimao. Lakbay was inspired by the atmosphere of the happy seaside and by the village resort’s efforts to reclaim the ambience and milieu of Ilocano life and culture.

“The show is a result of the group’s contemplation on the journey we took and how it affected our awareness of distance and home”, says Hilario. “Sitio Remedios was an example an attempt to travel back to an idyllic Ilocano past. The place was abuzz with projects to revive, reclaim and preserve in our everyday lives – and if we can articulate them in visual travelogues.”

Lakbay also explores the metaphor of “traveling” as inward and outward journeys, as pilgrimages of faith and leisure, of escape and flight or of cycles of departure and return. The six works tell of their different stories, anecdotes, insights and jokes that have found their way into their conversations on the road.
