About the Exhibition

Ranelle Dial’s Mga Sisidlan features pieces that reflect the personalities and histories of its owners as well as dug holes that Dial uses as metaphors for open space and nothingness. Nine oil pieces in all, four of them are rendered in black and white, and the rest in color. “I have always been interested in empty spaces and concealed thoughts, especially when these objects become a reflection of the individuals who used to own them.” Kitchen cabinets, personal drawers and chest boxes, in particular, have caught Dial’s attention. Even the box itself as a concept has its “repressive” and “progressive” qualities, adds Dial, who enjoys playing with such ideas. “It depends on how you use it.” A cabinet, for example, may be repressive in a sense that it is left behind or abandoned, and progressive in a sense that the owner is moving on to another chapter in her life.
