Nakakatuwang Makina na Pang-Sabado

About the Exhibition

Lawrence Borsoto revisits his inner child in Nakakatuwang makina na Pang-Sabado, his latest one-man exhibit at the West Gallery. The title is derived from a daytime animated series titled Saturday Fun Machine. He got the idea when he bought a Transformers toy last year, not knowing a movie inspired by the same franchise was also in production. “I just had an itch to paint that one toy that I bought,” recalls Borsoto, and later led to a second painting, a third painting, and until there was enough to complete a whole series.

One of the paintings, “Hindi ako Constucticon,” features a Transformers toy, supposedly belonging to a sub-group of the villainous decepticons that could turn into a road construction vehicle. Yet the main figure also has a heroic autobot emblem in its chest as it approaches a deserted town. Another painting, “Ang Magic Lasso,” the only piece done in acrylic, features Starscream, second in command to the deception leader, Megatron, being held by a lasso. Borsoto got the idea from Wonder Woman, where a magic lasso is used to compel the captive to tell the truth.

Borsoto, who considers the opportunity to paint in itself rewarding enough, majored in painting at the University of Santo Tomas.
