Renan Ortiz depicts dystopia through a variety of multimedia forms, including video, sculpture, neon signs, tarpaulin and mirror images. In these works, Ortiz tackles globalization, the effect of advertising, propaganda, and pop culture icons. Ortiz who originally took up political science before fine arts, feels using such non-conventional exhibition mediums is a welcome challenge. “I’ve always loved to sketch,” recalls Ortiz. This time articulating his idea through easily recognizable media is Ortiz’s way of making art accessible and hopefully, thought-provoking for the viewers. He adds that he also enjoys integrating his art making with teaching, raising awareness and appreciation especially with young students.
