"West Side Story"

West Side Story

About the Exhibition

Artists Joven Alcala, Juan Alcazaren, Nubbin Beldia, Felix Bacolor, Rafael Castaneda, Dindo Martinez, and Bernardo Pacquing pool together their creative minds in telling their own West Side Story. On view at West Gallery (West Avenue, Quezon City) from August 1 to 19 are their latest paintings, installations, and sculptural pieces.

“As artists, each one of us has taken individual paths, by choice or by circumstance. This show is a function of our friendship with one another, and our need, as artistic peers, to converge and share what we’ve experienced so far,” the group says in a statement. Through their artworks, they continue to “swap stories, and in the process, engage an audience vicariously.”

The result is an eclectic mix of styles and artistic preferences, as if each artist is updating his peers and the audience on what currently fascinates him. They give each other a free hand, in terms of articulating oneself through medium and large-scale paintings, installations, and sculptures. They have mounted several group exhibits together over the years, and what makes each exhibit special is the constant opportunity to piece together what they have been individually and collectively discovering in their personal and professional lives.
